Growing Demand for Tesla EV Charger Installations in Orange County

The growth of Tesla vehicles in Orange County has been explosive.  From the roads, golf courses, and shopping malls of Irvine to the stylish, luxury homes of Coto and Talega, thousands of Tesla vehicles are on the road.    Unfortunately, the pace of Tesla Destination Chargers and Tesla Super Chargers has not kept pace with the growth in sales of Tesla EVs.  The Chargers at Target, in various downtowns, and at outlets are often busy, leading homeowners in Orange County to install their own Tesla EV chargers in their homes.   The garage is generally the favorite location for a Tesla home charger installation.

Tesla Wall Connector and Home Charger Options

With the growth in Tesla and the addition of long-range electric versions of the Model Y and X, there has been a huge growth in the number of Tesla home EV charger installations for the two main residential EV chargers, namely the Tesla Universal Wall Connector and the Tesla Wall Connector.   The other popular Tesla charger is the more versatile and movable Tesla Mobile Connector, which has a 240-volt and 120-volt charging adapter.  Most of the Tesla home chargers installations that we do are for the  A Tesla Wall Connector is the most common type of home EV installation request since it combines power with connectivity and retails for around $130 less than the Universal Wall Connector.  The power, technology, and longevity of the Tesla brand are all compelling reasons to go for this brand of charger.  The other non-Tesla EV chargers on the market.

Benefits of Installing a Tesla EV Charger in Orange County

Here is what we like about the Tesla range of home chargers.
  1. Super high power, 240 volt 48 amp charger.  This is the fastest home charger available for most service panels, resulting in charge times of 6-10 hours for a typical Tesla.  In other words, you can wake up with a full charge and around 280 miles of EV driving range per day and avoid the lines at the Super Charger commercial charging stations.
  2. Good cable charging lengths so that you can reach most places in the garage and the driveway. The Gen 2 Tesla Wall Connector is 24 feet, and the Gen 3 Tesla Wall Connector is 18 feet.  This is adequate in most situations such as garage or driveway charging.
  3. Choice.  The Gen 3 Wall connector is provided as a hard-wired installation (slightly more power), and the mobile connector offers a plug-in unit, which is more than sufficient for daily charging.  Both are ideal for any Orange County Tesla home charging installation.
  4. Easy connectivity to home wi-fi and Bluetooth and broader connectivity and integration into Tesla’s charging network.  We also understand that the Wall and Universal Wall Connectors have over-the-air software update capability.
  5. Fast, 48 amp, 11.5 kilowatt per hour charging for both the Wall Connector and Universal Wall Connector.  This is the fastest home charging speed.
  6. Robust, reliable EV charging for indoor or outdoor use.    Many installs are in fact done outside (we all know those packed orange county homes with e-bikes and surfboards).
  7. Solar integration capability is available, such as with the Tesla power wall.  This enables a complete off-grid solution or energy-efficient solution whereby power generated during the day is stored in the power bank and then used by the Tesla charger to charge the car’s battery at night.
  8. Adjustable power outlet.   Some homeowners like to dial down the power to match the car’s charging rate or pull less power during peak hours when electricity is cheaper.
  9. Power sharing capability.  This means that a single circuit can power two Tesla chargers. This avoids the costs of a second circuit breaker and potential panel upgrades.

A common question we are asked is about the charging speed for Tesla vehicles. With increasing numbers of new and used Tesla vehicles, we receive more questions and inquiries related to hardwired EV chargers, plug-in EV chargers, and adapters for Tesla EV chargers.

Tesla vehicles have the ability for ultra-fast residential EV charging.  The charging speed of any electric vehicle, including Tesla, will depend on three main factors:

  1. Battery Size – The bigger your battery, the longer it will take to charge
  2. Power source – Residential homes ideally need a 40-50 amp breaker for the fastest charging
  3. Battery charge rate – The EV battery can only be charged at a certain speed.

The good news is that Tesla vehicles have the fastest battery charge rates, with Tesla EV charging capable of 11-12 kilowatts per hour, which is around 20% faster than most EVs currently.  The table below shows the recommended EV charger types, the required power source, and approximated miles per range of hour of charge.

The fastest Tesla EV chargers are level 2 EV chargers, with a circuit breaker that matches closely to the Tesla vehicle onboard charger capacity.

We have not identified too many downsides with Tesla Chargers is that the most recent charger versions have a small charging cable length compared to other commercially available EV chargers, typically 25 feet.  We have also heard of complaints related to cable stiffness, especially in cold conditions.  Price-wise, the Tesla EV chargers are at the higher end of the market.

Importance of Working with a Certified Electrician

When it comes to installing an EV charger, working with a certified electrician is crucial. Certified electricians ensure that your electric vehicle (EV) charging installations are done properly and safely, reducing the risk of electrical shock or fire hazards. They use industrial-grade parts for installations and stand by their work with a comprehensive warranty, providing peace of mind for homeowners.

A certified electrician will secure the necessary permits for the work and be present during inspections to ensure the correct completion, streamlining the permitting process. This not only ensures that the installation process is complete and meets all safety and electrical codes but also provides a safe and reliable charging experience.

Moreover, working with a certified electrician can make you eligible for rebates and incentives, such as the $500 refund from Edison for having a home charger installed. Tesla also recommends working with certified electricians, like EV1 Installations, for home charger installations, ensuring a high-quality and safe installation process.

Certified electricians have the expertise to design and install charging solutions that meet the specific needs of homeowners, including the installation of charging stations and different charging levels. By choosing a certified electrician, you can trust that your EV charging installation will be done correctly, safely, and efficiently, providing a positive experience and complete satisfaction.

Benefits of Having an EV Charger Installed at Home

Owning an electric vehicle (EV) comes with many benefits beyond just driving a modern car. However, consumers often feel uncomfortable investing in an EV due to their current lack of in-home charging stations.

However, by installing an EV charger at home, you’ll benefit from lower operating costs against gas-powered vehicles and commercial EV charging. However, electric vehicles are generally cheaper to run compared to traditional gasoline-powered cars. Electricity is generally more expensive at commercial charging stations, allowing you to save money while your vehicle is still in use.

Depending on your vehicle, your EV may take up to 10 hours to charge. Waiting for your vehicle at a mall, gas station, or local superstore is a long time. By installing a home charger, you can choose to charge your car overnight, allowing you to jump straight into your car and start your commute.

Government incentives are another attractive aspect of EV and EV charger ownership. Many governments offer tax credits, rebates, and other incentives to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles. These incentives can significantly reduce the initial cost of purchasing an EV charger, making it a more affordable option for many people.
